Valmiki Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of Maharshi Valmiki, renowned as the author of one of the most significant and popular epics in history, the Ramayana. He is revered as the Adi Kavi or the first poet of the Sanskrit language. His profound transformation occurred after a meeting with the sage Narada Muni and the repetition of the word ‘Mara’ (meaning ‘die’), which eventually evolved into ‘Rama,’ a word of great spiritual significance and the name of one of Lord Vishnu’s avatars. Maharshi Valmiki’s birth anniversary is celebrated annually on Ashwin Purnima, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, Valmiki Jayanti falls on October 28

Valmiki, originally known as Ratnakar, led a life as a dacoit, involved in robbing and killing people. It was a fateful encounter with Narada Muni that transformed his existence. Narada Muni advised him to chant the name “Rama” to attain spiritual redemption. However, despite numerous attempts, Ratnakar struggled to utter the word. In response, Narada suggested that he recite ‘Mara’ instead, which is the reverse of ‘Rama’ in Hindi. Over time, through persistent penance, the word ‘Mara’ gradually transformed into ‘Rama,’ and anthills formed around him as he continued his penance for many years. Pleased with Ratnakar’s unwavering devotion, Lord Brahma bestowed his blessings and named him Valmiki.
After years of penance and acquiring knowledge of scriptures from Narada, he was bestowed the title of Maharshi Valmiki. As he embarked on this new chapter of life, Valmiki, deeply moved by the sorrow of a female bird mourning her deceased partner, spontaneously uttered his first shloka, marking the beginning of his literary journey. However, it was when Lord Brahma entrusted him with the task of composing the Ramayana that the true purpose of his life unfolded.
According to the Ramayana, Maharshi Valmiki crossed paths with Lord Rama during his period of exile, and later, he provided refuge to Sita Mata in his hermitage when she was banished by Rama. It was in his hermitage that the twin sons of Lord Rama, Kusha and Lava, were born, and he imparted his knowledge of the Ramayana to them.
