Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. He had been receiving treatment at AIIMS New Delhi since August 19 for a severe chest infection resembling pneumonia.
According to party and hospital sources, the senior politician succumbed after a prolonged illness, as reported by news agency PTI.
Sources reported on Wednesday that Sitaram Yechury was on oxygen support, with his condition being closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. At the time, his status was described as “critical but stable.”
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) issued a statement on Tuesday, clarifying that the veteran leader was receiving treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
