This year, Netflix seems to have a recurring fascination with sci-fi themes. From “3 Body Problem” to “Spaceman,” the streaming giant continues to delve into space, time travel, and all things extraterrestrial. The upcoming action film, featuring Jennifer Lopez, follows the story of Atlas Shepherd, a cynical data analyst who harbors a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. Despite her reservations, she finds herself embarking on a mission to apprehend a rogue robot. However, when the mission takes an unexpected turn, Shepherd must rely on her newfound adversary to save humanity.
Directed by Brad Peyton of “Rampage” fame, the movie also stars Simu Liu from “Barbie,” Sterling K. Brown from “America Fiction,” and Abraham Popoola from “The Marvels.” Lopez, who also serves as a co-producer, adds star power to the cast. Crafted by Tomotaka Shibayama, known for his work with Studio Ghibli, “My Oni Girl” explores an extraordinary relationship between a regular high school boy and a demon girl, or oni. The story orbits around Hiiragi, a freshman yearning for acceptance and companionship, yet struggling to find his place among peers. Everything changes when he crosses paths with Tsumugi, an oni girl on a quest to find her mother in the human realm. Despite their glaring differences, Tsumugi takes Hiiragi on an enchanting journey that leaves an indelible mark on both their lives.
Eric

It looks like Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch is going back to his TV thriller roots as he stars in Netflix’s newest crime drama Eric. Set in the ‘80s, the six-part series follows Vincent (Cumberbatch), one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of a popular children’s television show, whose life is turned upside down when his son goes missing one morning before school. In a desperate attempt to bring him back, Vincent clings to a blue monster puppet called Eric and convinces himself that if he can get the puppet on TV, his child will return home. But as his delusions and desperation start to cloud his judgment, Vincent alienates himself from all those around him, leaving the puppet as his only ally.
This dark and dingy series brings the same feel as Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners or Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River, and hones in on what parents are capable of doing when their child is taken.
