Manu Bhaker’s historic achievement in Paris: First Indian to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games

Paris Olympics 2024: Manu Bhaker becomes the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.

Manu Bhaker exhibited remarkable composure as she made history once again at the 2024 Paris Olympics, marking her second achievement in three days. Following her historic bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol final on Sunday, the 22-year-old teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to secure third place in the mixed team event of the same discipline. With this victory, which brought India’s second medal at the Paris Games, Manu became the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.

The Indian duo triumphed over South Korea’s Lee Wonoho and Oh Yeh Jin with a score of 16-10 to clinch the bronze medal at the Chateauroux shooting range. This same venue witnessed Manu Bhaker’s third-place finish in the women’s 10m air pistol event on Sunday, marking a significant redemption from her disappointing Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020. This medal not only ended India’s 12-year drought for a shooting medal at the Games but also made Manu the first Indian female shooter to achieve an Olympic podium finish.

On Tuesday, with her second bronze in Paris, Manu Bhaker became the second Indian to win two Olympic medals in a single edition of the Games, following Norman Pritchard. Pritchard, who earned two silver medals in the 200m sprint and 200m hurdles at the 1900 Olympics, achieved this feat during the pre-Independence era.

Manu also became the second Indian woman to win two Olympic medals, following ace shuttler PV Sindhu, who won silver in women’s singles badminton at the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Overall, she is the third athlete in individual sports to win two Olympic medals for independent India. Wrestler Sushil Kumar was the first, earning bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games and silver at the 2012 London Olympics.

On Friday, Manu will have the chance to add a third medal to her name at the Paris Olympics when she competes in the women’s 25m air pistol event.
