Who is Rachin Ravindra? A New Zealand standout whose father named him in honor of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.
Who is Rachin Ravindra?
Rachin Ravindra is a talented cricketer from New Zealand. He is an all-rounder who has represented New Zealand in various cricket formats. Interestingly, he was named after two cricketing legends, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, by his father, reflecting his family’s love for the sport of cricket. Rachin Ravindra has shown promise in his cricketing career and is considered one of the rising stars in New Zealand cricket.
Rachin Ravindra, a name that shares similarities with Sachin and Dravid? Absolutely, you are correct – his father, in fact, chose this name in tribute to the Indian cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. Today, we will delve into his journey, highlighting how he ascended to become a member of New Zealand’s senior cricket team and the motivations that led him to pursue a professional cricketing career. Born to Indian parents in Wellington, Rachin has a deep-rooted connection to the sport of cricket. Hailing from Bengaluru, his family’s roots, Rachin made his Test debut in India two years ago.
Rachin Ravindra’s father, who resides in Bengaluru, was an ardent admirer of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Following Rachin’s birth, his father ingeniously combined “Ra” from Rahul and “chin” from Sachin to coin the name “Rachin.”
Rachin went from being an enthusiastic fanboy watching the 2019 World Cup to becoming one of the key contributors to New Zealand’s impressive performance against England in the 2023 World Cup opener.
“It’s quite an interesting story, actually. My dad takes a group of young cricketers to India every year, and we happened to be in Bangalore on a senior trip at the time. We were watching the final (2019) in a bar,” he shared with PTI.
“I watched the whole final. It was unbelievable and such a rollercoaster experience with the high and lows of the game. Having Indian supporters around us was pretty cool. It is an experience I will never forget.”
The young Indian-origin cricketer’s goal of playing for New Zealand one day was crushed by the game’s conclusion in 2019 final, but his drive to do so only became stronger.

Did he ever imagine back then that he would be a part of the 2023 squad?
“It’s been an incredible journey. At that time, when I was just 19 years old, a few years into my professional cricket career, you always have those dreams of representing your country in a World Cup. It’s pretty amazing how it’s all come together,” he expressed.
The cricket tours in India with his father have proven to be invaluable, according to the young New Zealand cricketer. While he usually plays for Wellington in New Zealand, he found himself batting at number 3 for the New Zealand team in their inaugural match of the 2023 World Cup against England.
