When is Haritalika Teej 2023?

Haritalika Teej is observed on the third day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha Tritiya) during the month of Bhadrapada. Find out the precise date for this celebration.

Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed on the third day of the bright fortnight, known as Shukla Paksha Tritiya, in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. On this auspicious day, devotees craft statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati using sand and offer worship, seeking marital harmony and offspring.

The festival derives its name, ‘Hartalika Teej,’ from a fascinating legend linked to its origin. The term ‘Hartalika’ is a combination of ‘Harat’ (meaning abduction) and ‘Aalika’ (signifying a female friend).

According to the legend, a dear friend of Goddess Parvati, out of concern for her, led her to a dense forest to prevent her father from forcibly marrying her to Lord Vishnu against her wishes.

WHEN IS HARTALIKA TEEJ?

As per Drigpanchang, Hartalika Teej is set to be celebrated on Monday, September 18, 2023. The auspicious timing for the morning Hartalika Puja ceremony will commence at 06:07 AM and extend until 08:34 AM, lasting for a duration of 2 hours and 27 minutes.

The Tritiya Tithi (third lunar day) begins at 11:08 AM on September 17, 2023, and ends at 12:39 PM on September 18, 2023.

WHEN TO PERFORM TEEJ PUJA?

The optimal time for conducting Teej Puja is during the morning hours. However, if morning Puja isn’t feasible, the Pradosh time is also considered suitable for performing the Shiva-Parvati Puja.

Devotees are encouraged to begin their day with an early bath, don fine attire, and then proceed with the Puja. They should offer reverence to the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati while narrating the legend of Hartalika during the ceremony.

In regions like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the Hartalika Vrat is recognized as Gowri Habba, an important festival dedicated to seeking the blessings of Goddess Gowri. Women, as part of this celebration, observe Swarna Gowri Vratha (a fasting ritual) to ensure a blissful married life.

TYPES OF TEEJ FESTIVALS:

There are three widely celebrated Teej festivals, particularly in North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

These three Teej festivals are Hariyali Teej, Kajari Teej, and Hartalika Teej. However, it’s worth noting that other Teej festivals, such as Akha Teej (also known as Akshaya Tritiya) and Gangaur Tritiya, are distinct from the three mentioned earlier.

Haritalika Teej, for instance, occurs during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha Tritiya) of the Bhadrapada month. It falls approximately one month after Hariyali Teej and is often celebrated one day before Ganesh Chaturthi. On Haritalika Teej, women traditionally worship clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
