Baldur’s Gate 3 Review In Progress
During The Game Awards in 2022, Baldur’s Gate 3 received a more definitive release timeframe for August. Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, expressed confidence in this timeframe. In February 2023, Larian Studios confirmed the official August release date, solidifying their plans for the game’s launch.
Baldur’s Gate 3 stands as Larian Studios’ most ambitious project so far. It’s crucial to highlight this fact because the studio has a track record of setting high standards with games like Divinity: Original Sin. In the case of Baldur’s Gate 3, the aim seems to be building upon the knowledge gained from previous titles and its extensive Early Access phase. The game successfully incorporates the beloved Dungeons & Dragons tabletop experience into a massive co-op RPG, which generally works admirably. However, there are instances where its grand scale might lead to some issues, prompting consideration of whether it occasionally becomes overwhelming.

However, it’s important to note that Baldur’s Gate 3 is an incredibly expansive game, and access to the game codes was only granted close to the review embargo. As a result, any assessments at this point are still ongoing, as we have only managed to delve into a portion of the game, approximately 40 hours of gameplay. The story seems to be vast and intricate, offering numerous variables and opportunities for replay.
Early Thoughts on Combat
Baldur’s Gate 3 impressively offers a vast range of options, staying true to tabletop-style character skills. Combat is thrilling, with countless choices that lead to surprising outcomes. Clever tactics, like using environmental traps and powerful spells, yield astonishing results. The game captures the essence of an exciting roleplaying campaign, allowing players to execute imaginative ideas within their party’s capabilities. It beautifully encapsulates the magic of late-night tabletop madness
Unfortunately, the combat engine sometimes falters, leading to awkward situations. Enemies may get stuck or find themselves in strange map positions, causing a pause before the next turn begins abruptly. While amusing at times, it can feel like taking advantage of the situation, particularly in crucial battles when formidable opponents skip turns inexplicably due to minor positioning issues.

As we have only just begun to explore the expanded character abilities and content beyond the Early Access version, there is much more to come. However, it’s worth mentioning that, despite the occasional glitch during combat, with patience and a willingness to save and reload frequently, much of what Baldur’s Gate 3 offers in terms of mechanics is highly enjoyable.
Baldur’s Gate 3 never made the heroes feel restricted in their actions. The game consistently presents solutions for any given party’s composition, seemingly without end. It’s a remarkable accomplishment on the part of the developers.
Baldur’s Gate 3 releases on August 3, 2023 for PC, with a PlayStation 5 version arriving on September 6, 2023.
